SAYING “YES” TO THE BOSS: NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS
Risk expert warns of cautious employees in a down economy

Dallas, Tex. (November 4, 2010) – Is the current struggling economy encouraging workers to provide less value to their employers? Risk specialist, author and noted speaker            Danny M. Goldberg, founder of SOFT GRC, says fear of unemployment is fostering an environment where employees act so cautiously, their companies lose out. He calls this situation the “Yes Man Phenomenon” or YMP.

Goldberg who is frequently hired by corporations and auditing organizations to train on governance, risk and compliance issues, has come across many companies who notice their employees are less engaged and likely to just agree with their supervisors instead of possibly providing alternative solutions to problems.

“Ironically, employees often get hired because of their initiative and ability to think outside the box,” said Goldberg, CPA, CIA, CISA. “But, in this economy, the fear of disagreeing with a supervisor, which could lead to firing, causes an employee to keep good ideas close to vest. The employee becomes a “Yes Man” and the employer loses out on receiving valuable advice that could make the company more nimble.”

Through speaking engagements and a written article, Goldberg is encouraging managers to combat YMP with a series of steps that fosters an environment of open communications that leads to good ideas.

Allen Wesson, Internal Auditor with Dallas Independent School District agrees with Goldberg: “The manager keeps an enthusiastic employee by listening, evaluating and adopting new and good ideas. Give the employee freedom to make the changes necessary to incorporate the new process.”

Goldberg, professional commentator in the forthcoming book Internal Auditing: Fundamental Principles and Best Practices, is available for speaking engagements and interviews to discuss YMP and to offer insight on how to avoid it.
