Stephen Shelton
Stephen is a Chief Audit Executive providing Internal Audit, ERM, Compliance and Consulting leadership expertise to help companies improve their bottom line and mitigate risk.
He most recently served as Senior Vice President/Internal Audit, reporting directly to the Audit Committee for Blockbuster Inc. At Blockbuster he established a new Internal Audit function; led an outsourced Internal Audit function subsequently transitioned to an in-house staff; led company wide fraud risk assessments, performed enterprise risk assessments, and led FCPA compliance procedures and training; reduced SOX compliance cost by approximately 50%; re-engineered the audit process and developed the IT audit function. Prior to Blockbuster, he was Vice President, Internal Audit at Belo, one of the nation’s largest media companies where he led Internal Audit, and provided leadership for Enterprise Risk Management and SOX Compliance activities.
Stephen also had prior experience as Director Internal Audit Services with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas where he developed contract audit services in the Southwestern United States and consulted on all aspects of establishing and running internal audit departments. While at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Stephen worked with companies in a variety of industries, to develop risk assessments, implement the COSO control model, and reengineer business processes. Prior to joining PwC, Stephen had 18 years of financial, operational, and IT internal audit experience, including six years managing an audit staff for American Airlines and six years with Northwest Airlines.
Stephen earned his Masters of Business Administration with a major in Computer Systems and his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Toledo in Ohio. He is a Texas licensed Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Information Systems Auditor.
Stephen provides innovative approaches to reducing SOX Compliance costs; expertise on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and protecting Personally Identifying Information; FCPA compliance, ethics hotline and corporate compliance leadership, and investigation services. He is an experienced national speaker and trainer on consumer data privacy issues and best practices, effective communications with audit commitees, and effective SOX compliance leadership.
